Rastus and Hattie

Rastus and Hattie

Rastus and Hattie
by Lisa Langford
Audioplay Adapted and Directed by Lanise Antoine Shelley
With Illustrations by Roy Thomas

Needra and Marlene enjoy a perfect post-racial friendship until two problematic robots walk into their christening celebration. These automatons, based on Westinghouse’s 1930 brown-skinned robots, and a glitch in the time-space continuum place them at opposite ends of society in an alternate past. This provocative comedy moves swiftly from the outrageous to the profound as it delves into our traumatic legacy and explores new ideas about how to move forward. Recorded at Chicago’s Classick Studios, this audio play will be paired with provocative illustrations created by artist Roy Thomas and viewed on Vimeo.

This is part of both 3 Play and 100 Club Subscription Series in Season Thirteen 2020.

This audio play with illustrations is 90 minutes plus one 5-minute intermission.

Zoom talkbacks with special guests take place beginning at 8:45 PM on Thursday and Friday nights. Link to Zoom talkback, in addition to link to the Vimeo with password protected link, is emailed out to all ticket holders one hour before showtime. Special guests include director Lanise Antoine Shelley (Sept 24), playwright Lisa Langford for Teen Night (Sept 25), Natalie Y. Moore (Oct 16) and others TBA. Moderator is Mildred Marie Langford.

What to do if you did not get the link 1 hour before showtime?  Do you have gmail? Check your promo folder. If it’s not there, check your spam.  If you still cannot find it, do not stress!  Simply email boxoffice@16thstreettheater.org where Malcolm will be standing by to assist you with any needs you have. Malcolm is standing by on email one hour prior and 30 minutes after showtime to help you.

Content Warning: Rastus and Hattie includes racist caricatures, racism, and some profanity.
