Berwyn, IL (December 2021) The Berwyn Development Corporation (BDC) will honor Berwyn’s Violet Flower Shop with the 12th Annual George W. Ashby Award during the BDC’s Annual Meeting and business community celebration on Thursday, January 13, 2022, from 9:30 am – 10:30 am. The event will celebrate the recipients of both the 37th annual Piper Award and the 12th Annual George W. Ashby Award. To keep the safety of all staff and attendees a priority, the event will be held virtually through zoom.
The George W. Ashby Award for Business Excellence is a local honor named after one of Berwyn’s distinguished early architects. Mr. Ashby was responsible for the design of every grade school in Berwyn as well as J. Sterling Morton High School. The award is given annually to one Berwyn-based business that presents a professional and favorable image to Berwyn, provides quality goods or services, maintains a visually appealing space, and practices high quality customer service to its patrons.
Marlene and Alan Comella have been Berwyn residents for 70 years. The couple met at a young age as they were neighbors growing up. Alan’s extended family had always been in the flower business, which inspired the couple to venture into the industry and open their own flower shop. They couldn’t think of a better place to lay their roots down than their beloved Berwyn. On March 1st, 1978, Berwyn’s Violet Flower Shop opened their doors for business.
Having greenhouses make Berwyn’s Violet Flower Shop unique to the flower industry. The flower shop boasts a garden center in the springtime offering vegetable, perennial, and annual plants. Over the years, Berwyn’s Violet Flower Shop has acquired a loyal customer base. Many residents and local businesses make up Berwyn’s Violet Flower Shop customer base. Marlene and Alan handpick their flowers daily, often taking multiple trips to the market in a day to fulfill their orders. Marlene stated “We have met so many wonderful people over the years and have also lost many loved friends along the way. The families we do business with have come to us for all occasions. We’ve done their children’s’ communions and seen them grow up over the years to now be doing the flowers for their wedding!” The business is known for their hospitality, customer service, and top-notch quality of flowers. They have been recognized in Checkbook Chicago and the Chicago Consumers Magazine for “Best Places To Go To” for flowers in 2010 and 2016.
Beyond their love for flowers and the Berwyn community, Marlene and Alan Comella have expressed great value for their family. Berwyn’s Violet Flower Shop has been not only their life’s work, but a place where they raised their family as well. The couple was able to raise their children in a happy, healthy, and accessible work environment. Marlene recalls watching her kids play in the greenhouse and encourages her customers to take bring their kids and create the same memories in Berwyn’s Violet Flower Shop greenhouse.
Outside of running a successful business, Marlene and Alan are committed to giving back to the community. The North Berwyn Park District applied for a grant through which Disney funded “Project Grow.” This consisted of a garden designed by Marlene which was used as an outdoor classroom that allowed children to plant their own seeds and see the process through to fruition. The Comellas are also passionate about cancer awareness. They started “Flowers For Hope” in 2010, which raised funds for breast cancer awareness.
Berwyn’s Violet Flower Shop’s dedication to the City of Berwyn is worth celebrating. Their involvement has made an incredible impact and we are thrilled to present them with this year’s Ashby award. Congratulations!
